Mightier Than The Sword

In the ‘seventies I used to wear a badge that said

“Well meaning Guardian readers against the bomb”.

(in fact I may still have it.)

Nowadays Guardian readers are more associated with knitting muesli and driving electric cars (thank you Mr Clarkson.)

The food writing in that esteemed organ has always been first class. (They have Hugh Fearlessly-Eatsitall as their Weekend food writer at the moment; in the past they have had Colin Spencer, Mathew Fort, and my personal favourite, Richard Ehrlich). One of their less well known writers is Dan Lepard.

In honour of the English apple season, I direct your attention to his apple cake recipe. It is simple to make, and a delight to eat.

I've been a Guardian reader for a few years now, having also proudly weaned my parents off the dreaded Daily Telegraph when purchasing it for the purpose of job hunting. I always turn first to Georgio Locatelli's column on Italian food, but we are a bit mifed at the disappearance of Zoe William's column in the Saturday magazine.

The dreaded Daily Torygraph. Well done A.C.T.

Talking of newspapers - am I the only person who finds the Independent insufferably preachy?

A newspaper should be just that, news. Everyday on the front page of the Indy all you get now is a bloody lecture!

The Independent has been crap for years... was never a fan. The Grauniad has always been 'the' paper of choice.

Back on the subject of badges... I still have a bucket of GLC badges tucked away... just in case it ever comes back. :D

You don't mean the green "We'll Meet Again" badges by any chance? We still have one somewhere.

Great firework display on the last night!
